DFL (Design for love) African Inspired Vintage Purses

DFL is an African fashion label owned by Nigerian designer Olawunmi Funbi-Olufeko. It was launched in 2005 and started its vintage purse production this year. DFL purses are made entirely in Nigeria with the exception of the frames that is sourced from abroad.

The fabrication range consists of batik prints, raw silk and vintage aso-oke that are over 30 years old.
I Adore the wooden details
Review-

1. The clever combination of these fabrics and detailing that include buttons
2. The use of both metal and wooden frames

Add to the beauty and character in these items. I think it’s a decent and laudable effort from the label, there’s always room for improvement and variety.

One Nigerian Boy Speaks to Coal and Terry Vintage

Coal and Terry Vintage is a husband (Damilare Jimoh ) and wife (Azeezat Owokoniran-Jimoh) run company based in Chicago that sells Vintage fashion. Before COAL N TERRY VINTAGE they both received first degrees in nursing and accounting respectively. Despite their degrees they knew they wanted to build our very own Vintage fashion Empire. Years down the line they have fulfilled that dream and now sell some of the nicest vintage dresses for women. One Nigerian Boy gets an exclusive chat with the Nigerian vintage empire owners.
Notice Me  Vintage Dress $104.00

What made you guys start Coal and Terry?
We love everything vintage from Vintage furnitures to vintage clothing. I (Azeezat) started collecting vintage peices because I would go to my local vintage Boutique/antique stores and see peices that weren't my size but I never could leave without a purchase because I knew someone out there wouldl cherish it the way I do.
What year did you guys launch Coal and Terry?
COAL N TERRY was first an Ebay auction store that we started late 2008 and we decided to be on our own. So COAL N TERRY VINTAGE.COM came alive this year 2010.

How do you guys source vintage items?
We travel all around the country (United States) looking for unique vintage boutiques/antique stores with unique and timeless pieces that are in good to excellent condition.

What particular designs or fabrics are the biggest sellers?
Sequin beaded dresses are our #1 sellers, sometimes we get special personal shopping requests by buyers just for these pieces.
How old are some of your oldest pieces?
The oldest we've ever carried was about 50yrs old but we typically carry pieces from the 60's-90's.

Apart from your online store, are there any physical stores for coal and Terry?
Currently COAL N TERRY VINTAGE is strictly online based but we do home visits just for Chicago and Northwest Indiana clients. Still working on Physical stores/interested retailers.

Where do you guys see Coal and Terry in the next 5 years?

In 5 years we hope to have several stores in major cities in the United States and of course other countries.

One Nigerian Boy Speaks to Fast Rising African Designer Simi Osinubi about her Label Babushka

The prominent jacket in the image above gives me oxygen
Young African designer Simi Osinubi has only been making clothes for a few years now and recently launched her label Babushka, which is 9 months old. She has a keen eye for detail and makes simple chic garments with loads of hand stitching and pin tucking that give her dresses added value and an air of affluence. I got to know about the brand through Le Petit Marche monthly market where she’s a regular and her stand is one where I like to linger and just feel the clothes and give my eyes a dose of beauty. Although she is yet to release a collection, the few pieces we’ve seen so far show a lot of promise and with time Babushka would only get better.

A closer look at the pintucking

What are the Ethos of your label , what do you want Babushka to represent?

A feature that is common to all of our designs is wearability. To quote one of my favourite designers, Alber Elbaz, ‘…if it’s not edible, it is not food. If it’s not wearable, it is not fashion’.
We’re also very particular about the finishing of our clothes and we try to make every garment in such a way that it stands up to international standards. I believe clothes should look as good on the inside as they do on the outside.

What influences your Designs?
Most times when I get an idea for a design, I make a detailed sketch and make notes as to colour specification and type of fabric and possible alterations that could be made to the design and then I source the fabric and other materials. Other times it works the other way round. I could be fabric shopping and as soon as I see some fabric I immediately know what I want to create with it.

Soft flowy fabric with beautiful pleats at the shoulder

I am constantly inspired by the minimalism of Phoebe Philo at Celine, the creativity of Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel, Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld) and Marc Jacobs (Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs). Both these men come up with 6 collections each year, Spring/Summer and Fall, not including any ‘Pre’ collections or ‘Resort’ collections and somehow keep their customers wanting more every season. I always say there are only so many ways to make a dress so it takes a certain amount of creative genius to keep people interested.
J’adore the bow at the back of the green dress and the sequins

Here in Nigeria, I am inspired by Jewel by Lisa. I think she is one who understands the importance of creating a brand. I can identify a JBL design almost instantly.
In reference to the details of my clothes, I employ a lot of ruching in my designs and I love sequins. As for fabric, I love chiffon for draping and because it is very practical for our weather here in Nigeria.
  Why the name Babushka?
Babushka is a Russian name that is used to refer to the little Russian nesting dolls that have a smaller doll on the inside as you open them up. Some of the things/people I am most fascinated by are of Russian origin; Vodka, Miroslava Duma and Fabergé eggs! I think the dolls are absolutely beautiful as is the name. Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2009 Paris-Moscou collection also featured a darling enamel Babushka doll bag. Everyone loves a Babushka!

Who is the Babushka woman?
The Babushka woman is one who is self-assured. She understands her own style and is never a fashion victim. When asked to describe my label I always say ‘wearable is the new couture’.
I like to think our pieces are all very special but at the same time fit into the Babushka woman’s existing wardrobe and she can mix and match our pieces with items she already has in her wardrobe.

The designer does all the intricate beading herself

What’s next for the Babushka Label?
A collection of about 10 dresses or a little bit more would be ready soon.

This jackets bears loads of resemblance to the one Rihanna wore in her ‘What’s my name video. Only that its longer, but it’s not a copy guys, she has had this design for long.

One Nigerian Boy Speaks to Alex Folzi

The Fagbure twins Fola and Fela (pictured above) are the creative’s and owners of startup label, Alex Folzi.  They were born August 13, 1991 in Benin city, Edo state, Nigeria and grew up in Benin/Lagos/Abuja before finally moving to Canada for studies. Growing up they practically travelled all over the world and have been to more than 20 states in Nigeria alone. This knack for adventure and exploration served as inspiration for their label.  They are undergrads at Grant Macewan University  studying commerce with majors in International business.

What’s the inspiration behind starting up Alex Folzi?
Funny story; we remember getting into an argument on how much we spend on clothes in a month (because it was really much). We argued and fought so badly my sisters couldn’t separate us. So we finally came up with a conclusion “Hey why don’t we just start our own line” The inspiration for the brand came from our “Entrepreneurship Sprit” like our mum would say. We always had a huge passion for fashion. So we decided to mix that with the little knowledge of business to start our own line. It motivation started last year back in December after a trip from New York. We decided to start this company because we had so many designs already drawn on paper.

What’s the story behind the name of the label?

We are Alex Folzi. Well Alex is the short form of Fola’s English name “Alexander” and Folzi comes from Fola as well. That was the nickname given to him back in high school. People often ask why we decided to use one person’s name for the brand. But to us it doesn’t really matter. We decided to use Alex Folzi because Fola had the first idea to start the line.
 How old is the label?

The label is just 11 months old. It was founded January 2010 and incorporated April 2010.

What’s the label's ethos?

The world leader in vintage, classy and elegant style. Alex Folzi has been associated with the art of fashion since January 2010. Our styles allow for the uniqueness of individuals who seek to express themselves through fashion.
What other creative endeavors are you guys involved in?

Modeling, Fashion designing, Interior designing, Fashion styling, Directing (short movies, photo-shoots), photography, Entrepreneurship and PARTYING (Yup, we party hard lol)

Who is the Alex Folzi man?
The Alex Folzi man is gentle and that allows him to express himself through fashion. Also inspired by vintage looks, and the iconic design styles of the Military.
Pop Art background -on which text is written- by Marco Santaniello
Do you guys intend to add other products to your product list?
Yes we do. We have actually started working on the next collection for our apparels and accessories. It’s been delayed for a while due to schoolwork. But hopefully before next month we should be done with the designs.

  Where are your goods produced?
This collection was manufactured in China. Our next collection would be manufactured in Canada/The States.
