African American designer Laquan Smith’s is one of the most interesting young designers at the moment. His creations for fall/winter 2011 were neon bright in interesting colors like pink, green and turquoise all done in nylon fused with spandex. He also layered lace over the nylon fabric which created an interesting effect.
My favorite pieces in the collection are the multiple colored jackets.

Jewel by Lisa
Lisa Folawiyo has grown in leaps and bounds from the early days of the Jewel by Lisa label and turning it into one of the foremost Nigerian labels at the moment. Her fall/winter 2011 collection was 40 pieces strong and it showed a designer with a vision for her collection not lost in translation.
She stuck to her strengths in embellishments and use of the batik print and luxe silk which worked best for her thanks to custom prints.
Very impressive showing which once again secured her a place during the Arise magazine spring/summer Fashion showcase in New York later in the year.
Toju Foyeh
In all honesty I wasn’t expected to be impressed by the new Toju Foyeh collection coming from her previous collections. She seemed like the kind of designer who’s stuck on one aesthetic path which becomes bland after a couple of seasons.
That was not the case during her fall/winter 2011 showing at the Arise magazine fashion week. She cleverly stayed away from batik print and instead employed interesting lace and sheer fabric cleverly. The dresses were all body con and the amount of beauty flowing backstage was intense.
By far my favorite collection from the designer; eagerly anticipating her next collection.
